Unsung Heroes

The Unsung Heroes Project aimed to identify people from around the country who have dedicated their time to reviving, preserving, and developing the arts. We wish to express our gratitude for the work that they have done. We worked with nine local researchers, who traveled to every province to identify and interview artists and cultural practitioners. For the past 6 months, they have met and interviewed people who have dedicated their lives to the arts. During the festival we featured stories from 25 of the Unsung Heroes that we discovered on that journey. This exhibition was created by TAN Vatey and Sinta WIBOWO.

Skill: Arts and Culture Supporter

“I established a Large Shadow Pupppet theatre troupe in Cambodia. The troupe was based in Wat Reachbo in Siem Reap, and was unique in that we followed the original form very strictly in accordance to its original form. This sacred art form had almost disappeared during the Khmer Rouge regime. Art is the spirit of a country; from literature, to language, and traditional customs and culture. Art is a nation's signature. Our ancestors taught us that if we want peace for a society, its people must be at peace first. People can be peaceful when they are moral and virtuous, and this can be achieved through practice.”
