Unsung Heroes

The Unsung Heroes Project aimed to identify people from around the country who have dedicated their time to reviving, preserving, and developing the arts. We wish to express our gratitude for the work that they have done. We worked with nine local researchers, who traveled to every province to identify and interview artists and cultural practitioners. For the past 6 months, they have met and interviewed people who have dedicated their lives to the arts. During the festival we featured stories from 25 of the Unsung Heroes that we discovered on that journey. This exhibition was created by TAN Vatey and Sinta WIBOWO.

“Peace means contentment; no war, no violence, no anger. Art can create peace, through education, awakening the senses and bringing joy. I want people to pay attention to the arts, to give them value. We must take care of the unique signature of our arts, keeping our activities fresh, so that future generations don't forget. I have been training young people, and with support from my neighbors and local organizations, we have created a space where they can perform in my village. I am proud when I see that my community has an art troupe. The way most of the people in my village know me is as "the arts lady", and for my indigenous weaving practice.”
