Unsung Heroes

The Unsung Heroes Project aimed to identify people from around the country who have dedicated their time to reviving, preserving, and developing the arts. We wish to express our gratitude for the work that they have done. We worked with nine local researchers, who traveled to every province to identify and interview artists and cultural practitioners. For the past 6 months, they have met and interviewed people who have dedicated their lives to the arts. During the festival we featured stories from 25 of the Unsung Heroes that we discovered on that journey. This exhibition was created by TAN Vatey and Sinta WIBOWO.

"My mother is someone who likes to chant smot, to sing and to recite poems. I also like to sing. My aunty encouraged me to apply to work for the government. I went to Phnom Penh for six months to learn about the arts. After completing my studies, I started work at the Department of Culture and Fine Arts. I used to compose stories and perform for people with the Provincial artists group. Mainly, the stories related to Khmer Rouge soldiers with an aim of calling them to come back to the community. I have also been working with various NGOs, providing trainings on educational performances which includes health, raising children and breastfeeding. In addition, I help to train a youth arts group, form a troupe, choreograph stories as well as perform educational spoken theatre.”
